where Munn’s is coming from

Introduction

             Every church community has a theology, a way of thinking about God, a way of framing a spiritual life.  Munn’s United Church is no exception.  What follows is a “snap shot” of our faith life as a congregation of the United Church of Canada.  Hopefully, it helps you get a picture of who we are.

Some Important Affirmations

         God’s love for us and our world is a key component of our faith.  We believe that God cares exquisitely for each one, regardless of age, gender, social status, education, sexual orientation, or personal history.  We trust that God does not hold our faults against us, but encourages us to journey into wholeness, to grow in our ability to love one another, to seek the abundant life that Jesus promised us.

            We understand that sometimes God seems silent and far away from the pain we face and from the challenges that confront us.  We count on one another to remind us of God’s presence, and to hold us in our times of struggle and loneliness.  The faith community that Munn’s is mediates God’s grace to us.  We love God better because we are together.

            We are called to be inclusive of difference, and there is plenty of difference here at Munn’s.  We don’t all believe the same.  We don’t all love the same.  We don’t all look the same.  And we don’t all need the same.  We accept difference, and work at embracing diversity.  We hope that our church is a place for anyone who seeks God’s love. 

            We trust that scripture is a primary way to learn about God, but it is only one way.  We try to understand the ancient stories, but not as an end in themselves.  The bible is a starting place that helps us learn who God is in our time and in our context.  At Munn’s, every seeker is an interpreter of God’s meaning and we try to honour the various ways in which God is glimpsed in our lives and in our world.

            Munn’s United Church values the questions that get asked as people young and not so young search for the holy in their lives.  It is not required that individuals have God all sorted out.  It is not required to be of only one mind.  What is required is the courage not to have all the answers, and still to believe. 

            Munn’s is not a dogmatic church; that is, members do not need to agree to a single set of God-ideas.  More important than a uniform code of belief for all, is the honest search for God and meaning.  To support the various spiritual journeys of individuals, Munn’s offers openness, acceptance, and various opportunities to learn.

Conclusion

           Sunday morning worship is designed to support the many journeys that Munn’s folk are making to God and with God.  It is a good time to learn about the congregation’s approach to God, and also of its need of God.  In keeping with our desire to be open, you are welcome.
